These painted works seek to document and descontruct moments found in Puerto Rico’s current urban landscape and reconfigure them as a reflection: If we shape the landscape that in turn shapes us, then we become a mirror of our landscape. This contemplation directly affects my relationship to my city- Arecibo, Puerto Rico. It provokes me to emulate the contrasts between the estranged and the familiar; between the historic memory and the raw melancholy of the day to day. Through these works I revisit spaces absorbed by time and human interaction; spaces that become neutralized yet assaulted. I find these tarnished environments reveal our collective psyche throughout history and are directly correlated to our condition as a territory of the United States. Through these paintings I question how these spaces came to be what they are, and how this landscape subliminally continues to affect us daily.
